A Note from Maggie:
“Yoga came into my life at about 10 years old when my dance studio offered yoga as a method of cross-training and my reformed hippie father (who I saw practicing yoga in his home office floor one day for back pain and stress relief) introduced me to Eastern Philosophy. A few years later my mother offered me a mantra practice to help me relieve my stress after moving away for college.
But to be honest— that’s not when yoga fully stuck. I practiced on and off, even making my own sequences out of magazine clippings from Seventeen and Cosmo. It wasn’t until my mother passed when I was 21 years old that I turned to yoga— desperate for a healthy way to grieve and process the shock. It took about three yoga classes in the dark basement of a YMCA for me to realize that I had to share this practice with others.
I started my 200 hour teacher training the following year. I didn’t actually know if I would teach— I had never even taken a yoga class in an actual yoga studio before— I just knew, ‘I need to do this’. To justify the commitment to a training program I would say, ‘I don’t know if I’ll teach, but maybe one day I’ll want to open a studio back home.’ Well, that turned out to be true.
Yoga is more than touching your toes. For me, it’s the lifestyle and practice that asks us to dive into ourselves so we can open our hearts and minds to discover ourselves, to connect with one another; and better understand, accept, and find joy and peace in this life.
Teaching yoga is more than leading a great class— it’s about sharing your passion and helping others forge their own path. It takes a lot of intention to create a welcoming space for others to learn and grow together. It takes careful balance, a fierce sense of community, and a deep connection to yourself and the practice of yoga to be a yoga teacher.
It is truly my passion to get to share this practice with others, foster community, and to be a part of your evolving yoga journey.”
Homegrown Yoga is a safe, supportive, and confidential space for you to learn, grow, and express yourself.
